The Maijaniitty boathouse and guestroom is located on a rocky shoreline site in the Turku Archipelago. The new building is constructed on the foundations of an old fisherman’s house and follows the external form of the original building.
The building was constructed primarily as a boathouse, but a guestroom was fitted in upstairs. In summertime, when the boat is out on the water, the space, with its epoxy-finished floor, is used for meetings and parties. Thus the purpose of the original house as a dwelling is preserved and the windows give the impression that the house is lived in permanently when seen from the sea.
The timber-framed building is clad externally in vertical boarding painted black, and internally in white horizontal boarding. The staircase wall is clad with birch-ply panels. The floor of the boathouse has an epoxy finish, while the floor of the guestroom is finished in wood-blocks.
The roof has been recessed to form a roof terrace on the side facing the sea, which, is articulated to follow the rhythm of the fenestration. Though the building is on a high hillock, the black external cladding makes it almost invisible viewed from the sea.
